Objectives

Our research objectives are to understand the distribution, diversity and functioning of micro- and macro-algae in coastal systems, within the dynamic context of the ocean.

Research focus

We are working across multiple scales to investigate:
• The role of microalgae in biogeochemical cycles (carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, silica, iron);
• Processes affecting the abundance of harmful algae and their ecosystem impacts, including novel methods of detection;
• Underwater light quantity and quality and how this influences primary producers and satellite detection of biogeochemical parameters (broadly referred to as bio-optics)
• Physiological, genetic, and ecological factors that determine how algae will respond to a changing climate.
